An Oakmont High School graduate was one of 60 students in 18 states to recently win a Siemens Merit Scholarship. Laura McManus earned a $6,000 scholarship for college tuition. An installment of $1,500 will be issued annually for four years. McManus, who was a co-valedictorian for her graduating class, plans to attend the University of California at Berkeley. The Siemens Merit Scholarship is given to children of Siemens’ U.S. employees. Recipients were chosen based on high grades and PSAT scores, activities, contribution to the community, a recommendation and an essay about their personal characteristics, plans and goals. The Siemens Foundation awarded nearly $400,000 in scholarships funds this year to “encourage and inspire the next generation of scientists, researchers and thinkers to propel America forward,” according to a news release. ~ Sena Christian
