It was about as difficult as a three-set match could be, but it was worth it in the end.

Oakmont High School took care of host Bella Vista 25-22, 25-22, 26-24 on Wednesday night to clinch a share of the Capital Valley Conference volleyball championship.

The bucking Broncos (27-7 overall, 5-3 CVC) fought the whole match, working their way to a 24-24 tie in the third set. But Oakmont (29-2, 8-0) answered with two more points to close the match.

“We didn’t want to go to a fourth game,” Oakmont coach Shelby Weinberger said. “They were already running us all over the court. So I told them, ‘No one takes a play off.’ ”

Oakmont’s season has been dependent on a well-rounded team. That versatility was on full display Wednesday, as Katie Carte (14 kills) and Kyra Rogers (seven) each played well on the front line. Carte also had four service aces.

“Everyone has a responsibility,” Weinberger said. “It wasn’t just one or two people. Everyone has to do their job in order for us to be successful.”

Said Rogers, “We play together. We’re really a team. We’re always there for each other.”

Oakmont led 23-19 in the first set, but Bella Vista tightened up with three consecutive points. The Broncos tie the score at 22 in the second set before the Vikings closed it out with three points in a row.

Up next for the Vikings are home matches against Rio Linda on Monday and Casa Roble on Tuesday to close the regular season, followed by the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs on Nov. 2.

“We just need to continue with the basics,” Weinberger said. “Being smart with the ball.”
