Granite Bay U11 lacrosse team wins Bay Area tournament
Granite Bay’s U11 lacrosse team capped its season by winning the Surf City Tournament last weekend in Scotts Valley.
The Grizzlies went 7-0 in the tournament and defeated the FireHawks of the San Francisco Peninsula 6-3 in the championship game. Granite Bay finished the season with a 25-2 record and the No. 1 ranking by the Northern California Junior Lacrosse Association.
Cooper Gravlin scored two goals, and Josh Flanery, Grant Zerlaut, Anderson Marks and Jace Foddrill scored one each.
Granite Bay advanced to the final with a 4-3 comeback victory over a team from Los Gatos/Saratoga. The Grizzlies trailed 3-1 with five minutes left. Gravlin scored on a pass from Foddrill, then Foddrill tied the score with less than three minutes remaining. Gravlin scored the go-ahead goal in the final minute.
Granite Bay goalie Noah Costa, aided by the starting defensive line of Marks, Noah Riggs and Ben Mazure, allowed just nine goals in seven games and made 24 saves.
Local rugby team to play for State Cup title
The unbeaten Sierra Foothills Rugby Club’s JV Gold team will play for a State Cup championship Saturday.
The local team will play the South Bay Spartans of Carson at 10 a.m. at Jesuit High School in Carmichael.
The Sierra Foothills team is 15-0 this season and coming off a 59-27 victory over Lamorinda in the Northern California Invitational Tournament championship match.
In other matches, Lamorinda will face Oceanside at 1 p.m. in the boys varsity final, and Jesuit plays Wilson at 2:30 in the boys varsity high school title game.
