Students from the Creative Connections Arts Academy in North Highlands performed the Michael Jackson "Thriller" dance as part of national Thrill the World Day on Saturday at The Fountains in Roseville.

The second graders cut up their customers and put red paint on themselves to look like zombies, said teacher Carrie Emerson. The students got their groove on to solicit donations of dog and cat food to benefit the Placer SPCA in Roseville.

“I continue to be amazed by the compassion young people demonstrate toward companion animals in our community, especially those in need,” said Placer SPCA Chief Executive Officer Leilani Fratis. “On a daily basis, we have (about) 50 dogs and anywhere from 100 to 200 cats in our care either at our center or in volunteer foster homes. There are a lot of mouths to feed.”

Placer SPCA goes through an average of 280 pounds of dog food and 360 pounds of cat food in one week, she said. The organization also responds to about 15 requests weekly for pet food assistance from local residents.

“Our goal is to help people in need caring for companion animals to keep their pets and avoid relinquishing them whenever possible when that makes sense for both the individual and pet involved,” Fratis said.
