About 500 Stoneridge Elementary School students skipped the bus and walked to school Wednesday morning in light of National Walk To School Day.

Stoneridge Elementary School students laced up their tennis shoes and hit the pavement Wednesday, some walking and some running, but not too many taking the bus on National Walk to School Day.

The school hosted the event to raise awareness about healthy choices for kids and in support of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign, that encourages children to be active and fit.

“By raising awareness on the importance of healthy eating and exercise, we hope to empower our students to make better decisions for their future,” said Principal Meghan Baichtal, in a press release. “By leaving the car at home and walking to school, our families are also reducing the amount of air pollutants emitted by automobiles. It’s a win-win scenario.”
