Diamond Creek student body representatives Nick Dominguez, left, Sarah Davis, Zachary Snyder, Cole Errecart, Eric Mayfield and Jazzy Kittle sit the candy and a check for $731, the current amount of money equal to the pounds of candy they’ve collected so far that will be given to the American Red Cross.

Students at Diamond Creek Elementary School collected 731 pounds of candy so far that will be traded for cash to be given to the American Red Cross for victims of Hurricane Sandy. Image Orthodontics in Sacramento will pay $1 per pound to the school. In turn, Image Orthodontics will donate the candy to charities such as the Sacramento Food Bank and Sacramento Children’s Home, said Rachelle Doyle, marketing coordinator for the business.

“We’re looking at a total of $1,500 minimum,” Doyle said. The collection of candy ends Nov. 9. “The entire student body has participated,” said teacher Kim Triplett, who hatched the idea. “They really wanted to do something.” The school has about 630 students.
