British pop singer Cher Lloyd performs at Roseville mall
By: By Sena Christian, The Press TribuneHundreds of teenage girls hit the mall on Wednesday to see British pop singer Cher Lloyd in concert.
More than 1,200 fans braved the heat in the promenade of the Westfield Galleria at Roseville to hear several live songs by the 19-year-old Lloyd, who placed fourth on the seventh season of the U.K. version of "The X-Factor." She released her debut single in June 2011, and her new single "Want U Back" is No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Kara McVay, of Yuba City, won meet-and-greet passes from concert sponsor 107.9 the End and stood with three family members near the stage.
"We love Cher Lloyd," McVay said. "We know her from the radio, from 'Want U Back.' I think every girl can commiserate with that (song)."
The audience had to withstand a short delay for Lloyd to take the stage, but they filled the wait with chants of "Cher, Cher, Cher" and lots of screaming whenever the singer's name was referenced by the End's DJs.
A local performance group called Pop Academy with Roseville-based SING INC opened the show. The 10 young women in the group performed several of today's hit songs. Angelica Herrera, 19, said getting to open for Lloyd was an exciting experience.
"For local singers, it's a huge deal for us," Herrera said. "It's an amazing opportunity."
