Roseville’s Kolton Miller got his first taste of NFL in-game action Friday in the Oakland Raiders’ first preseason game against the Detroit Lions, a 16-10 victory for the silver and black.

Miller started at left tackle and played a total of 12 offensive snaps and one on special teams. During his time in the game, the Oakland line did not allow a sack.

The 6-foot-8, 309-pound Miller drew encouraging remarks on his Twitter feed about his footwork, cut-blocking and pass-rush recognition.

In perhaps his most significant play, however, Miller was called for a holding penalty on a would-be 60-yard touchdown run by Marshawn Lynch, nullifying the score – a call that Raiders head coach Jon Gruden did not agree with.

“That was a well-blocked play,” Gruden said after the game. “I was really ticked off, though, after it was called back… Chucky came out for a brief moment tonight.”

Miller has been getting first-team reps throughout training camp as the Raiders’ All-Pro starting left tackle Donald Penn is currently on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Miller is currently listed as a starter on the team’s depth chart alongside left guard Kelechi Osemele, center Rodney Hudson, right tackle Breno Glacomini and right guard Gabe Jackson.

The Roseville High graduate was the Raiders’ first-round draft pick in 2018, landing 15th overall out of UCLA, just five spots after his college quarterback, Josh Rosen, was taken at No. 10 by the Arizona Cardinals. Miller was named to the All-Pac-12 second team after his junior season. During his redshirt freshman season, Miller helped the Bruins to the second-lowest sack total in school history.

At Roseville, Miller was an All-Sierra Foothill League selection as well as a team captain in the Sacramento Optimist All-Star game.

The Raiders’ next preseason games are Aug. 18 at the Los Angeles Rams, Aug. 24 in Oakland against the Green Bay Packers and Aug. 30 at the Seattle Seahawks. Regular-season play begins Sept. 10 in Oakland against the Rams on Monday Night Football.
