Valley Christian Academy’s football team bounced back from its zero week loss like a kangaroo bounces off a trampoline.

Following a 60-13 loss to San Juan on Aug. 25, the Lions defeated Cristo Rey 26-18 Saturday night at San Juan in their Sacramento Metro Athletic League opener.

“We are becoming a better team,” head coach Todd Conroy said. “We’ve had some guys that have stepped up. We’ve had some guys step up that we weren’t really expecting to be where they’re at right now.”

Cristo Rey (0-2, 0-1 SMAL) ran a go-big-or-go-home offense that focused on a combination of shotgun and pistol formations. Saints quarterback Spenser Avis completed just 9 of 27 attempts but totaled 221 yards.

Valley Christian (1-1, 1-1) roared back with a 20-point third quarter. All-purpose player Teagan Mowry shifted from playing quarterback in the first half to tailback in the second. He caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Cameron Woodside and ran for a five-yard score in the third quarter. Mowry also scored on a one-yard run in the first period and had 126 yards rushing and receiving.

“I just want to play to the best of my ability, no matter what position,” Mowry said. “Just get the W and help us out. Wherever they’ll put me, I’ll be good.”

Woodside took over at quarterback in the second half and threw a touchdown pass. The team is transitioning from Mowry as the starting quarterback to Woodside.

“We switched to Cameron in the second half, and his leadership gave Teagan the opportunity … to really come out and do something special in the second half,” Conroy said.

Nick Norwood rushed for 139 yards and scored on a 50-yard interception return in the third quarter for the Lions.

Foresthill vs. Valley Christian at Highlands, 7 p.m.

Notes: The Wildfires (1-1) lost to San Juan 18-6 last week, one week after Valley Christian was blown out by San Juan 60-13. Foresthill tied the score at 6 on Tommy Sawyer’s 10-yard touchdown pass to Matt O’Brien, but the Wildfires turned over the ball twice in the last four minutes and San Juan turned both into scores.

Foresthill’s Wes Archbold missed the game because of an ankle injury after rushing for 183 yards and two touchdowns in the season opener against Marysville. Coach Jim Herlehy told the Auburn Journal that Archbold could return to face Valley Christian.
