Roseville’s Gerig lands baseball scholarship with Nevada Reno

Brad Gerig of Roseville is playing baseball at the University of Nevada Reno.

Gerig, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound junior outfielder who played high school ball at Jesuit, considered offers from the University of San Diego and Cal State Monterey Bay.

Playing for Sierra College last spring, Gerig led the Big 8 Conference with 37 RBI and was third in slugging percentage at .485. He hit .318 and was named to the All-Big 8 second team.

Gerig hit a walk-off home run against Laney that advanced Sierra to the Super Regional, and his game-winning homer against Fresno City sent Sierra to the state Final Four in Bakersfield.

Gerig played this summer for the Hawaii Aliis and led the Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League in RBI (27), doubles (10) and sacrifice flies (four). Gerig also tied for fourth in runs (25), was sixth in slugging percentage (.444) and ninth in batting average (.306).

Soccer Challenge at Oakmont on Sept. 30

The Knights of Columbus will hold a Soccer Challenge from noon to 2 p.m. Sept. 30 at Oakmont High School.

Local and district competitions will be held and will award girls and boys from ages 10-14 in goal-shooting accuracy. There are several levels of competition.
