Woodcreek lays it on the line to beat Oakmont

Mixed in with 204-pound junior Mitchell Layton breaking off long sprints and agile senior quarterback Stephen Nogosek spinning away and turning sacks into rocket throws down the field, Woodcreek High School tipped its collective cap to its offensive linemen in a most interesting way Friday night.

Twice on the way to a 52-27 nonleague victory at city rival Oakmont, the Timberwolves shifted jersey numbers usually meant for the trench to the outside. One such shift drew the host Vikings (1-2) offside. The other resulted in an eight-yard gain for Layton, who rushed for 121 yards in 14 carries and scored four touchdowns on runs of seven, 56 and two yards and an 86-yard kickoff return.

“Just another thing for people to contend with,” Woodcreek head coach John Hildebrand said, citing the play of Joe Padilla, Bryce Hartman and Andrew Boren, among others, as linemen who have paved the way for the improving Timberwolves (2-1), their 101 points over the last two games leaving the season-opening 68-28 loss to Folsom and Jake Browning’s 10 touchdown passes further distant in the rear-view mirror. “The O line has been playing their tails off since summer.”

Friday night’s wrinkles in the game plan were an extension of the previous week’s victory at Casa Roble, when Layton ran for 203 yards and three scores.

“The O line and Mitch grew up last week,” Hildebrand said. “We didn’t want to stunt that growth.”

Woodcreek relied on the run, and not Nogosek’s arm, in forging a 35-21 halftime lead. Worth noting, Cody Morrison's fifth extra-point kick landed in a garbage can. It was good - twice.

The Vikings drew first blood on Taylor Laird’s two-yard run, which capped a 10-play, 70-yard drive to open the game on a beautiful night, and took a 14-7 lead on Caspian Hamric’s four-yard sweep to the right.

Oakmont tied the score at 21 on a 59-yard pass-and-run from Laird to Hamric, who squirted out of the backfield uncovered, but Layton returned the ensuing kickoff 86 yards to put Woodcreek ahead for good.

The Vikings drove from their 27-yard line to the Woodcreek 5 in the final 1:49, as Laird scrambled for 19 yards on third and two and completed passes to Robert Walton, Justin Holmes and Michael Schmitt. But on second and goal from the 5, Laird was stopped at the 1 as the halftime horn sounded.

“That stop was huge,” Hildebrand said.

Laird passed for 193 yards and ran for 89 in the first half. He finished with 230 yards passing on 15 of 30 completions and 123 yards rushing in 16 carries. The senior ran for two scores and passed for one.

“The offense was really pretty good in the first half,” Oakmont head coach Tim Moore said. “We had a good halftime. We made a couple of adjustments, but some things didn’t pan out.”

Michael Daw, Tommy Torres, Justin Young and Jared Duran led a Woodcreek defense that limited Oakmont to 84 yards in the second half. The Vikings had 332 yards in the first half and totaled 416.

Woodcreek totaled 436 yards. Nogosek threw two touchdown passes to Blake Robinson in the second half and finished 11 of 17 for 224 yards. Nogosek also used two pump fakes to avoid a sack before scrambling 36 yards to the Oakmont 2. That set up a scoring run by Robinson, who also had five catches for 88 yards. Seth York had three catches for 78 yards, including a 54-yarder.

“Seth York had some amazing high school catches, some of the best you’ll ever see,” Hildebrand said.
