Friday football caps: Division II champ Vacaville comes to Granite Bay
VACAVILLE AT GRANITE BAY, 7:30 p.m. Friday
Notes: The Grizzlies (0-2) come off their idle week by acting as hosts to Vacaville (2-0), the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II champion in 2011 and an early entry this season in Northern California and state polls.
The Bulldogs have beaten San Jose-Valley Christian 35-27 and Kentfield-Marin Catholic 28-24 and, per usual, they’re spreading the load on offense. Seniors Curtis Goins, Jacob Te’o and Jared Paulin have rushed for 132, 110 and 101 yards in two games, and junior David Mewborn has 99 yards. Te’o has 24 carries, Goins 22 and Paulin and Mewborn 12 each. Vacaville has blended in 26 pass attempts with its 88 running plays, and senior Nic Ardave’s 14 completions have resulted in 262 yards and four touchdowns.
Granite Bay seniors Beau Hershberger (13 tackles) and Mason Conen (20 tackles) will lead the defensive attack against Vacaville. Sophomore Cameron Smith leads the Grizzlies with 25 tackles. Hershberger and Goins were named to the MaxPreps Preseason All-NorCal Team.
OAKMONT AT ROSEVILLE, 7:30 p.m. Friday
Notes: Roseville has won five of the last six meetings in the series between the rivals. All have been full of offense, the lowest-scoring meeting being Roseville’s 27-7 victory in 2010. The closest margin of victory was Oakmont’s 35-28 decision in 2009.
Each school has a new quarterback this season — Kyle Downie at Roseville and Taylor Laird at Oakmont — and both appear to be improving. Downie completed 12 of 20 passes for 116 yards and ran eight times for 31 yards in the Tigers’ 24-7 loss to Folsom. Laird accounted for 353 yards passing and running, plus two touchdown runs and a scoring pass, in the Vikings’ 52-27 loss to Woodcreek.
Matt Razzano is Roseville’s leading rusher and receiver through three games. Oakmont’s Justin Holmes has 13 catches for 250 yards and three scores. Both are juniors.
Only the varsity will play Friday night. The freshman and JV squads are scheduled to play Thursday night.
ANTELOPE AT WOODCREEK, 7:30 p.m. Friday
Notes: Antelope (2-1) opened with victories over Liberty Ranch (41-7) and Monterey Trail (17-14) before being nipped by Rio Linda 15-14 last week.
While statistics show the Titans to be a balanced offense — 525 yards rushing and 492 yards passing — they favor the run by more than a 2-1 margin: 92 running plays to 43 passes. Antelope junior Tyler McCombs has completed 31 of 41 passes for 458 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. Senior Tyler Winston has both touchdown catches among his 14 receptions for 205 yards. Senior Steven Mercado has 10 catches for 172 yards. Senior Jonathan Crippes is the Titans’ leading rusher with 360 yards in 43 carries, an average of 8.37 yards per carry, and three touchdowns. He has broken a 79-yarder.
VALLEY CHRISTIAN AT DELTA, 7 p.m. Friday
Notes: With Nick Norwood out for the season and Cameron Woodside battling to return this week, Valley Christian head coach Todd Conroy said it will take a mental effort to improve play moving forward.
“We need to see more poise, particularly just getting ready,” Conroy said. “We have to win like they (Foresthill) do. We have to want to win like they do.”
Delta (0-3 overall, 0-2 SMAL) has surrendered 146 points heading into its homecoming game. The Saints allowed 445 total yards against Rio Vista and 410 to Woodland Christian.
