CLARKSBURG — Valley Christian Academy earned a big 40-6 Sacramento Metro Athletic League win over Delta on Friday night.

The Lions scored three touchdowns in the first quarter and two in the second. Delta scored its only touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Junior quarterback Cameron Woodside and senior outside linebacker Teagan Mowry did most of the scoring for the Lions (2-2 overall, 2-1 SMAL). Woodside scored on a one-yard run and threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Mowry to end the first quarter.

Woodside ran for touchdowns of 30 and four yards in the second period and had a four-yard scoring run in the third.

“All the teams — offense, defense and special teams — were operating on all eight cylinders,” Valley Christian head coach Todd Conroy said. “We are finally getting it together with all of those guys. My offensive and defensive coaches, they put in a great game plan.”

Delta was on the 5-yard line in the third quarter, but Valley Christian shut down the Saints (0-4, 0-3).

“Everything seemed to click,” Mowry said. “Our line was firing. The holes were huge out there.”

Conroy and the players credited the offensive line with giving the Lions opportunities to score.

“We had a lot of running space, and we got to give all the credit to the offensive line,” Woodside said. “We couldn’t have won this (game) without our line.”

Valley Christian will be host to Modesto-Big Valley Christian (0-3) in a nonleague game next Saturday and then will travel to Woodland Christian on Sept. 28.
Mowry said the win gives the Lions confidence going into the rest of the season.

“Confidence is key because we want to take that into our next game,” Mowry said. “We want to take this confidence into Woodland, and that will really help us in league.”
