Two Eureka soccer teams win titles; Blast Off continues in Roseville

Two teams from the Eureka Youth Soccer Club won championships last weekend in the season-opening Hot August Blast Off in Roseville.

The Eureka Wolfpack captured the boys U15/U16 flag with a 2-1 victory over Azzurri Aztecas in the final. The Wolfpack pounded the Folsom Blast and Eureka Pumas by identical 6-0 scores and defeated GC Fusion 2-1 in the semifinals at Maidu Park.

The Eureka Gold defeated RC Barcelona 3-2 for the boys U9 title. The teams tied 2-2 in an earlier match.

The Gold also beat Lincoln FC Chelsea 4-1 and Eureka Platinum Ice 3-1.

The Rocklin Edge topped the Roseville Blazers 3-1 in the boys U13 final at Maidu. The sides tied 0-0 earlier in the tournament.

The Blazers downed FC Elk Grove Thunder 2-1 in one semifinal. Rocklin beat the Eureka Avalanche 4-0 in the other semi.

The Loomis Galaxy went 3-0-1 to win boys U10. The Eureka Samba went 3-1, beating the Folsom Gunners 5-2, Eureka Fire 3-1 and RC Revolution 4-1 before losing to the Galaxy 4-0.

In boys U11, the FC Elk Grove Legends nipped Lincoln Real Madrid 1-0 in the final at Maidu.

Three in a row for Granite Bay golfer

Drake Mendenhall of Granite Bay stayed hot on The First Tee of Greater Sacramento Junior Tour by winning his third consecutive tournament.

Mendenhall followed age-group victories at Catta Verdera Country Club in Lincoln and Rancho Murieta by claiming a one-stroke victory at Woodcreek Golf Club.
Mendenhall shot a 9-over-par 81 to win the boys 12-13 division.

Virgie Velazquez of Roseville fired a 2-over 74 to win by one stroke in girls 15-18, and Vanessa Richani of Granite Bay won by a stroke in girls 12-14 with a 5-over 77. Neeve Chen of Roseville was second with a 78.

Also, Andrew Penney of Rocklin and Christopher McKnight of Elk Grove tied for first in boys 15-18 at 2-over 74, and Connor Gaymon of El Dorado Hills won boys 14-15 with an even-par 72.

Lord’s Gym to hold 10K/5K fun run

Lord’s Gym Youth Sports Outreach Center is planning its inaugural 5K and 10K fun runs for Saturday, Sept. 22.

The runs will begin at Lord’s Gym in Roseville, 702 Atlantic St., and take a path on the Miner’s Ravine bike trail along Dry Creek.

Cost is $35 for the 5K, $45 for the 10K and $20 for kids 13 and under. Proceeds will go to Lord’s Gym in Roseville and South Sacramento.

The inaugural fun runs will be hosted by Ken and Austin Andrews, who were contestants on season 11 of the Biggest Loser.

When/Where: The Eureka Youth Soccer Club’s season-opening tournament continues this weekend with the girls competition. There are 37 teams entered in eight divisions from ages U9 to U19. Matches are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at Lockridge, Maidu and Olympus parks.
