Roseville resident Dr. Robert Azevedo assumed the role of physician-in-chief of the Kaiser Permanente Sacramento Medical Center on July 1.

Azevedo, 51, is responsible for medical services at the 287-bed hospital on Morse Avenue and its satellite medical offices in Sacramento and Davis. He now oversees the health care of more than 170,000 Kaiser members, according to a press release.

Azevedo previously served as assistant physician-in-chief for Women's and Children's Services and the physician lead for Physician Human Resources since 2004. Prior to that, he was chief of Women's Health from 2002 to 2004.

Under his leadership, Kaiser opened its 174-bed Women and Children's Center at the Roseville Medical Center in 2009. It is the largest birthing center in the greater Sacramento area, according to the release.
