Granite Bay High School on Tuesday successfully defended its Sac-Joaquin Section Division II golf championship.

The Grizzlies shot a 387 team score and defeated Sierra Foothill League rival Del Oro by four strokes and Christian Brothers by 13. The top three teams qualified for the section Masters Tournament on Monday at The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton.

Granite Bay’s depth again was the key. Alex Gibbs and Chuck Pedone tied for low score among the Grizzlies at 3-over-par 75. Bryan Wise carded a 78 and Brandon Baumgarten a 79.

“I’m really happy for my guys. They have huge goals in mind,” coach Terry Stafford said, noting his Grizzlies placed seventh in the NorCal tournament last year and failed to reach the state tournament. “They really want to make it to state this year. That’s their ultimate goal. They’ve had that goal from day one.”

Qualifying as individuals for Masters were Lee Gearhart of Woodcreek and Zach Will of Oakmont, each at 2-over 74. Julian Woodfork of McClatchy was the medalist with a 1-under 71.
