Gearing's shutout helps put Oakmont in Division II baseball playoffs

Oakmont High School on Monday clinched a berth in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II baseball playoffs.

The Vikings’ 8-0 victory over Rio Linda, coupled with Christian Brothers’ loss to Casa Roble, put Oakmont in the playoffs. A win at Rio Linda in today’s regular-season finale would give the Vikings (16-8 overall, 8-5 Capital Valley Conference) the second seed from the CVC.

Senior Ryan Gearing pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out nine.

Senior Tom Wieser went 2 for 3 with a double and scored three runs for the Vikings. Seniors Jimmy Lunardelli and Robert Walton each had a triple.

Valley Christian 4, Faith Christian 0 — Levi Hagerty’s RBI double in the second sent the Lions (17-6) to their 13th consecutive victory.

Isaac VanPatten had a two-run double in the seventh to back a five-hitter by Jimmy Shaw, who threw an 84-pitch complete game. Shaw walked none and struck out 10.

Hagerty had two doubles, VanPatten two hits and Teagan Mowry a double.


Valley Christian loses three — The Lady Lions lost to Foresthill 15-0, Sacramento Adventist 11-3 and Woodland Christian 6-3.

Erin Patterson doubled against Sac Adventist. Against Woodland Christian, pitcher Katie Urban struck out four, and Hannah Heckman and Sarah Finnell each went 2 for 3, Finnell with a triple.
