In response to concerns west Roseville residents expressed at a council meeting in December, the city has found an alternate site for an off-leash dog park in the West Roseville Specific Plan.

This new park site is two acres and centrally located within the plan area, said Director of Parks, Recreation and Libraries Dominick Casey, during the April 18 Roseville City Council meeting. The site is located off West Park Drive and south of the wastewater treatment plant. The area is surrounded by open space.

The council unanimously approved the new site and the city will now solicit feedback from nearby residents. Then staff will develop a site specific master plan for council approval.

Senior Landscape Architect Tara Gee said the new site offers more of a city-wide facility.

"By moving the site central to the West Roseville Specific Plan it makes it more of a community rather than a neighborhood (park)," Gee said.

Councilman John Allard said the early residents of the area wanted a dog park, but people who moved in later did not.

"I think we've got to be responsive to what the neighborhood wants," Allard said.

Council members had previously directed staff to find a location away from residences and within walking distance from the originally proposed site in the W-53 school/park site. They also asked for a property that's ready for construction within a year's timeframe.

The proposed site is owned by West Roseville LLC and is about 825 feet away from the closest house. The park would be about a mile walk from the W-53 site.

The cost for developing this dog park ranges from $100,000 for basic fencing and mowed native grassed to $450,000 for fencing, turf, trees, irrigation and paved off-street parking. A design has not yet been finalized. The park will cost the city about $10,000 annually in maintenance.
