Celebrity host Stan Atkinson was in town to honor residents at Sun City Roseville on Sunday, Oct. 30. Some 300 Sun City residents and guests honored 10 of their neighbors for their commitment to community service during the inaugural “Above and Beyond Celebration.” More than 50 nominations were submitted for consideration of this honor. “Each of the nominees deserves recognition for their significant contributions to the community,” said De Emory, chair of the event. “The committee members were all impressed with the range of volunteer services Sun City Roseville residents are engaged in, and their true commitment to giving back to the community.” Volunteer activities ranged from traveling to foreign countries to participate in Habitat for Humanity projects, to delivering meals to homebound seniors, feeding the homeless, and volunteering for local hospitals, schools, police departments and animal shelters. One of the honored residents, Judy Ellison, created a soft rag doll that has resulted in more than 5,000 being made and sent to comfort children who have experienced loss and suffering in places like Chernobyl, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Atkinson served as master of ceremonies as videos and slide shows provided the background showcasing each of the honoree’s volunteer efforts. ~Staff report
