Roseville Thunder Red 12U rolls into Western Nationals
The Roseville Thunder Red 12-under girls softball team won a Greater Sacramento Softball Association tournament the weekend of June 25-26 in El Dorado Hills and earned a berth in the ASA Class B Western National Championship from Aug. 2-7 in Fresno.
The Roseville Girls Softball team won three games in single-elimination play on the final day, including two by one run.
“In the beginning of the season, we set the bar high to earn a berth to the nationals,” coach Charles Logan said.
Thunder Red started with a 12-0 win over the Davis All Stars and followed with a 10-1 triumph over the Folsom Freedom All Stars. A close loss to Foothill put Thunder Red into championship play as a No. 2 seed.
Thunder Red fell behind Elk Grove Gold 3-0 in its first game in championship play, but big hits by Kaley Johnson, Madison Palubicki and Shelby Amaro led a four-run rally and the Roseville team won to earn a rematch with Foothill in the semifinals.
Thunder Red prevailed 6-3 in a contest that featured fine defensive plays and timely hitting. Alexis Logan went 3 for 4 to lead the offense.
In the championship game, Corrina Pochini allowed just two hits and was backed by flawless defense to hold Elk Grove Blue scoreless.
Thunder Red scored in the bottom of the final inning to win 1-0. Johnson hit a one-out single, stole second and scored the winning run on Amaro’s single through the infield.
“It was a true team effort,” Coach Logan said. “On Sunday, the whole team pulled together, stepped up and showed what it takes to be a champion.”
