Kyle Coates has been busy enough during his senior year at Oakmont High School that he hasn’t played much for the tennis team this spring.
He competed in the Capital Valley Conference singles tournament Monday at Gold River Racquet Club, shook off a little rust and was in championship form. Coates advanced to the singles final, scheduled for 3 p.m. today at Gold River, against top-seeded Matt Alves of Casa Roble.
Vikings coach Kevin Chorjel expected a big performance from the 2010 Sierra Foothill League singles champ, who qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II Tournament on May 5-6 at Johnson Ranch.
“I knew he would do well,” Chorjel said of Coates, who plans to play tennis next school year at Chapman University in Orange. “He was a little rusty, but he’s a great player.”
Also for Oakmont, Zach Paiva made it to the semifinals in his draw before losing to the No. 1 seed. Adit Kothari won his first match and lost to the top seed in his second match at No. 4 singles. Brandin Breider also followed a victory in his first match with a loss to the top seed at No. 5 singles, and Taylor Phan lost his first match at No. 3 singles.
