Fourth-graders at Sargeant Elementary School went back in time Thursday, Feb.11, to experience what school was like in the 19th century. The fourth graders are learning about the one-room school houses used in the 1800s and have been discussing, comparing and contrasting, and watching videos depicting the life of American frontier children. Students were encouraged to dress in period attire. That meant leaving the backpacks and lunch bags at home because students in the 1800s did not carry these modern items. They were able to use cloth sacks to carry books and lunches, as children did in that time period. The day’s lessons replicated the lessons taught during that era, including some geography/history, reading, arithmetic, spelling, penmanship, a spelling bee, and lunchtime games.
