The Sierra College Ridley Gallery presents Dissolution of Selfhood, featuring oil and acrylic paintings by Omar Thor Arason and Manuel Fernando Rios. Combining figurative and abstract imagery, both Rios' and Arason's work creates a reality rife with ambiguous narrative. Arason delves into the "intersection of myth, religion, politics, morality, and psychology on both a universal and personal scale", while Rios explores "the idea of borders, real and unreal", the result is an exhibition rich with heavily layered visual symbolism. This exhibition runs October 22-November 15, with a reception November 8, from 5-7.
Arason and Rios received bachelor's and master's degrees in Studio Art from Sacramento State University, after which they each earned Master of Fine Arts degrees, Rios at the University of California Davis in 2011, Arason at Stanford University in 2017. Omar Thor Arason is a Sacramento based painter and sculptor. He was raised in the U.S, Iceland, and England, and later lived in Norway and Denmark before returning to the U.S. in 2001. Also based in Sacramento, Manuel Fernando Rios teaches printmaking and painting at Sacramento City College and Sierra College. Both artists are members of the Axis Gallery in Sacramento.
