Valley Christian Academy’s defense had another rough night, as the Lions lost to Cristo Rey 60-24 in a Sacramento Metro Athletic League game at Highlands.

After allowing 18 points to Cristo Rey in their first meeting this season, running backs Villagran Luis and Kahlil Williams combined for 271 yards rushing and seven touchdowns Saturday. Williams scored on two receptions, two runs and a fumble return.

The loss came after Valley Christian (2-4 overall, 2-2 SMAL) gave up 48 points to Woodland Christian and 55 to Modesto-Big Valley Christian in its two previous games.

Injuries have plagued the team, including Saturday night, when defensive lead Caleb Van Patten suffered a severe concussion and quarterback Cameron Woodside exited because of a rib injury. Primary running back Nick Norwood sustained a season-ending injury in the third game.

“We have it in us (to improve),” head coach Todd Conroy said. “The biggest problem we have is that our injuries are hurting us. We’ve been moving guys around too much. Caleb Van Patten is a big loss. When he was able to play on the field, he was our defensive support.”

Javier Castillo returned the opening kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. From there, Cristo Rey scored at will, never needing to punt.

The Saints (2-5, 2-3) wrapped up the victory with two more Williams touchdowns in the final quarter.

“We’re just going to go with a base defense,” Conroy said when asked what the Lions will do to improve. “We’re going to work our young guys into understanding the game better. We are so underclass dominant that they’re going to have to play under fire for the next three games.”

The offense improved in the second half. Sophomore Micah Gunter made a sweet one-handed grab in the corner of the end zone in the fourth quarter on fourth and 20. Senior tight end Josh Bowden shifted between running back and tight end and gained 114 yards rushing and 106 receiving.
