As expected, the wrestlers of the Sierra Foothill League dominated the first day of action in the 130-pound weight at the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II finals. In total, 12 wrestlers from schools in Roseville and Granite Bay are still unbeaten and through to the semifinals heading into Saturday’s second day of competition, led by three 130-pounders – Jake Elliott of Oakmont, Dylan Jankovich of Roseville and Austin Mason of Woodcreek. Woodcreek’s Sean Merigold (103), Peter Santos (125) and Angelo Ciaraglia (135) are also in the final four of their divisions, as are Granite Bay’s Andrew Broadland (112), Ian Mook (125), Adam Wagner (145), William Anderson (189) and Gavin Andrews (275). Roseville’s Ryan Fratto (171) rounds out the local grapplers in the semifinal round. A number of others are still alive in the consolation bracket, with one loss, but still capable of reaching the top five and a trip to the section Masters. With just eight wrestlers left in each weight class, these athletes still have a fighting chance Saturday. Granite Bay’s Shane Saylor (103), Daniel Flinders (119), Johnny Cooley (135) and Charlie Gordon (160) make it nine Grizzlies coming back for day two at Oak Ridge High School in El Dorado Hills. Woodcreek’s Jesse Screeton (140), Roseville’s Logan Palmer (160) and Oakmont’s Russell Lebard (215) are all back in a must-win situation when the second day gets going Saturday at 11 a.m. The top five in each division move on to the section Masters tournament next weekend.
