Buljan woodshop teacher, Duane Calkins presented bass fishing champ and Auburn resident Skeet Reese with a custom-made electric guitar last week. Built by Calkins and his seventh and eighth grade students, the Warrior-style electric guitar was given to Reese in honor of his 2009 world championship win in the Bassmaster Classic. With the Bassmaster Classic approaching next month, the yellow and black guitar, painted to match Reese’s gear, is Calkins’ way of showing appreciation to the local boy who made it big. Calkins and his students have also made and presented custom guitars to James Hetfield of Metallica, numerous local bands and are currently working on one for country music singer Brad Paisley. Building custom electric guitars is part of the Buljan Woodshop curriculum that Calkins has spread to other schools throughout the state and nation. Starting with raw materials, Buljan seventh and eighth graders learn to build their own electric guitars that they take home at the end of the school year.
