Woodcreek wins sub-section cross country crowns
Karlie Garcia of Oakmont High School dominated the Sac-Joaquin Sub-Section Meet with the fastest time of the day, and Woodcreek claimed victories in the Division II varsity boys and girls competitions Saturday at Frogtown in Angels Camp.
Garcia had a time of 17 minutes, 34 seconds and a margin of victory of 1:12 in the Division III race. Marisa Carino finished fourth in 19:12 and Nyralee Chhotu 14th in 20:19, as the Vikings placed second to Del Oro’s 71 points. Oakmont had 78 points.
Woodcreek placed its top five runners in the top 12 in winning the 20-team Division II varsity boys competition with 37 points. Del Campo was second with 52 points.
Trent Brendel of Granite Bay won the race in 15:49. Woodcreek’s Hunter Tyler (15:50) and Jon Horvath (16:06) finished second and fourth, and Taylor Guinnip, Brandon Biando and Sam Devereux came in 10th through 12th in 16:28, 16:29 and 16:32.
Woodcreek’s varsity girls squeaked by Vacaville in Division II with 62 points to the Bulldogs’ 64. Karina Nunes of Woodcreek was the winner in 19:11, and Shayna Powless of Roseville placed second in 19:17. Also for the Timberwolves, Rosemary Dipentino and Samantha Gomez each clocked 19:49 to finish 10th and 11th. Ciara Donnelly was 14th in 19:57 and Brooke O’Brien 26th in 20:23.
Granite Bay was fifth with 134 points, led by Katie Mersereau in eighth place (19:48) and Natalie Hassna in 16th (20:00).
Granite Bay won the Division II sophomore boys crown with 31 points, blitzing Jesuit’s 116. There were five Grizzlies in the top nine: Will Greenwood in third (11:40), Andy Moudakis in fourth (11:44), Spencer Palmer in seventh (11:52), Matt Clement in eighth (11:53) and Weston Holt in ninth (11:55).
Also, Justin Clark of Woodcreek clocked a 16:44 time to place second out of 217 runners in the Divisions I and II JV boys race, and Oakmont’s girls were second in the Divisions III-V JV girls race.
Girls team tennis
Granite Bay 9, Christian Brothers 0 — The Grizzlies recorded another shutout to advance to a Division II semifinal home match today against Rocklin. Granite Bay is gunning for its fifth consecutive section crown.
No. 6 singles player Ashlyn Howes came back to win in a third-set tiebreak 4-6, 6-3, 10-4, and the No. 3 doubles team of Brooke Williams and Esha Lal won 6-0, 6-7, 10-6.
Boys water polo
Division II quarterfinals — Woodcreek will meet Oakdale, and Granite Bay faces McClatchy as the Division II playoffs move to Whitney High School today.
Woodcreek defeated River City 16-6, and Granite Bay topped Ripon 12-3 in the opening round Saturday. The semifinals will return to the Roseville Aquatics Complex for the semifinals Friday and the championships Saturday.
