Woodcreek sweeps Del Oro in SFL girls/boys doubleheader
A twist in Sierra Foothill League scheduling brought girls and boys varsity basketball teams together for doubleheaders Friday night. The party may still be going at Woodcreek High School.
The Timberwolves pulled a shocker in the girls game by knocking off reigning champion Del Oro 50-45, and the boys made it a sweep by edging the Golden Eagles 54-53.
The boys (11-11 overall, 2-3 SFL) used a 14-6 third quarter to separate themselves from Del Oro (14-8, 2-3) and then withstood a charge in the fourth quarter. Woodcreek senior Tyler Milani led all scorers with 20 points, sophomore Noah Blackwell scored 16, and junior James Leyva had 10.
The real surprise came in the opener. Outscored 16-3 in the third quarter, Woodcreek’s girls held Del Oro to eight points in the fourth period and handed the Eagles their first league loss.
Seniors Aliya Davis and Liz Gehweiler scored 12 and 11 points and sophomore Mackenzie Kohler eight for Woodcreek.
Stephanie Geyer and Lauren Heyn led Del Oro with 10 points each.
