The contestants now have only one week left to perfect their songs in time for the second-annual RTAA Idol competition.

The judges of the contest, held by the nonprofit Roseville Theatre Arts Academy, seek to identify the best local singer. Following auditions April 22, they've narrowed down their search to 12 finalists. The Press Tribune is profiling three finalists each week until the big day.

Name: Kennedy Kaya

Age: 16

Residence: Roseville

Where do you go to school? Woodcreek High School. (I'm a) sophomore.

Did you participate in last year's Idol competition? I did not.

What song did you sing for your audition? "Speechless," by Lady Gaga.

Tell me about your singing/performance background? I've been dancing since I was 5, singing since I was 10 and acting since I was 11. I've been in a few productions with Sacramento City College alongside my mother, who is also an actress. I'm also a member of my high school's dance team, Music 'n' Motion.

What are some of your hobbies? Although I am involved with all sorts of performing arts activities, I mainly train in dance. I'm currently training at the Northern California Dance Conservatory. Performing is what I live for, but I (also) love having quality time with family and friends, and being a teenager and shopping till I drop.

Any interesting thing people should know about you? I am an extremely perky, outgoing human being. I love people.

Name: Tre Nixon

Age: 18

Residence: Roseville

Where do you work and go to school? I'm a senior at Woodcreek High School. I'm going to San Jose State and I'm going to be majoring in criminal justice.

Did you participate in last year's Idol competition? I did not.

What song did you sing for your audition? I picked a pretty unique one. It's called "Mario Kart Love Song." It's this Asian guy on YouTube and he taped a thing of yarn to his face so he had a Mario mustache and his name is Sam Hart.

Tell me about your singing/performance background? I play guitar, I play bass and I kind of play piano. I only seriously started singing when I joined choir last year. I always wanted to be a singer, but I was really, really tone deaf and I just started practicing my freshman year. I really enjoy (singing) indie, more solemn sad songs. But just singing anything is awesome.

What are some of your hobbies? I play music, that's about it. I'm practicing for Battle of the Bands at Woodcreek. When I move to San Jose - I know a bunch of people there - we're definitely going to start a band.

Any interesting thing people should know about you? People never expect that I'm half-black and my natural hair is like a Jheri Curl. I look like Prince.

Name: Nick Helmer

Where do you work and go to school? I actually work at my school. I'm a theater technician at Woodcreek High School.

Did you participate in last year's Idol competition? I did not.

What song did you sing for your audition? "Beyond the Sea," by Bobby Darin.

Tell me about your singing/performance background? I'm a very active member of Woodcreek's theater department. I've been in six shows in my time there, including our recently closed musical, "Once Upon a Mattress." I also play bass and sing for a band called No Where But Up. Performing is something I really enjoy so I've made it a huge part of my life.

What are some of your hobbies? Well, I draw, I write, and I've recently taken a liking to Dungeons and Dragons.

Any interesting thing people should know about you? My lung collapsed twice last year due to a condition called spontaneous pneumothorax. I won't bore you with all the details, but it basically means there was air in my chest cavity that kept my lung from inflating. I had surgery to help prevent it from happening a third time, and so far it's working. I suppose that's pretty interesting, especially given that this is a singing competition.
