Woodcreek nips Del Oro in early SFL softball clash

Frankie Orlando homered and drove in two runs, and Woodcreek High School scored the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning to defeat Del Oro 4-3 on Tuesday in a Sierra Foothill League softball game in Loomis.

Christal Vierra went 2 for 3, freshman Kayla Curtan doubled, and Amanda Horbasch drove in a run for the Timberwolves (2-0 overall, 1-0 SFL).

The Golden Eagles (0-1, 0-1) tied the score with two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Oakmont 9, Placer 5 — Good bunting and Krysten McCue’s highlight-reel defense led the Vikings over Placer. With a new fence erected, McCue made two great catches, including one that robbed Placer of a home run.

Oak Ridge 7, Granite Bay 3 — The Grizzlies (0-5) led 3-1, but the Trojans (3-1) tied the score with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and pulled away with four in the sixth to win the nonleague game. Nina Murphy-Cook had a triple for Granite Bay.


Boys golf


Woodcreek 231, Del Campo 249 — Bryce Johnson shot a 4-over-par 40 at North Ridge to lift the Timberwolves over the Cougars.


Boys volleyball


Granite Bay 3, Whitney 2 — The host Grizzlies swapped sets with the Wildcats before prevailing 25-22, 20-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-13. The teams also swapped the lead in the final set with Brendan Freitas’ deep roll shot in the corner tying the score at 13, followed by Austin Downs’ block for the match.


Girls lacrosse


Granite Bay splits two — The young Grizzlies defeated Novato 12-8 and lost to San Ramon-California 11-10 in their first two games of the season.


JV baseball


Roseville wins, ties — Roseville defeated Yuba City 14-4 and tied Vista del Lago 9-9 on Wednesday at Raley Field. Devin Orr allowed a run and four hits and struck out three in 4 1/3 innings to earn the win for the Tigers against Yuba City. Andrew Grinder had two doubles for Roseville. Orr swung a hot bat for Roseville against Vista del Lago, going 3 for 5 with a triple and two RBI.

Vista's Vince Valentine had three doubles and two RBI.
