The last piece of the Little League District 54 all-star puzzle started to take shape Tuesday night with the start of the Senior division tournament at Lembi Park. Defending district champion Maidu and its crosstown rivals from Woodcreek both captured blowout wins in the tournament's opening game. Woodcreek exploded for 13 runs in the second stanza as it blasted Folsom National 15-2 in a game shortened to five innings by the 10-run mercy rule. A pair of walks and a George Corp infield single got the first inning started, and then Joey Valdez delivered a two-run single to put Woodcreek on top early. As it turned out, that was just the appetizer for the main course that came in the second stanza. The second began with a Will Ketchum single and a Perry Beaber double, followed by a two-run George Corp base hit. Alex Montes, Derek Guerra and Bobby Pajer all delivered run-scoring singles. After Ketchum banged a sacrifice fly to score another runs, two errors and a walk jammed the bags for Montes, who ripped a 350-foot triple to right-centerfield to clean the bases. Guerra, Valdez and Beaber split the pitching duties for Woodcreek as it moved on in the tournament. Maidu began defense of its title with a 13-3 five-inning win over Folsom American. Mack Boone, Keegan O'Connor, Jack DaYager and Spencer Price contributed strong work with the leather to back the pitching of Jared Phelan, who tossed 3 2/3 strong innings in the Maidu win. Kyle Mott came on to get the final four outs. James White drove in three runs and Mack Boone chased home two more in the Maidu win. Woodcreek gets a pass on to the winner's bracket final in the five-team bracket, while Maidu faces Roseville West at 8 p.m. Thursday night at Lembi in its next contest. Roseville West had a first round bye. The winner of the Maidu vs. Roseville West game will take on Woodcreek at 7 p.m. Saturday.
