The girls’ cross country team at Woodcreek High School took advantage of its depth on Saturday at the Yolo County Championships, racing ahead of area powerhouse St. Francis to win the team title. Courtney Crosta finished one second behind individual champion Nicole Mendoza from St. Francis, covering the 5K course in 19:55, but the Lady Timberwolves claimed the championship because they had four runners finish in the top 10. In addition to Crosta’s strong finish, Stephanie Romo was fourth in 20:28, Amanda McNabb finished eighth (21:04) and Ashley DeVriend was 10th (21:21). With four St. Francis runners coming across in the top 12, the time of Woodcreek’s fifth finisher was critical. Sami Gomez was the 13th runner to cross the finish line, and finished seven positions ahead of the fifth St. Francis runner to play a key role as Woodcreek’ team score of 34 bettered St. Francis by nine points. Granite Bay had a solid day in Yolo as well, finishing third in the team competition behind the third-place finish of Brooke Holt, who covered the course in 20:13. The Lady Grizzlies’ Christine Zavesky (21:01) took the seventh position in the individual event.
