Woodcreek High School girls basketball coach Raymond Beck is leading a young team into the 2010-11 season.

Beck started four juniors and one senior in the Timberwolves’ 50-46 loss to Casa Roble in a Foundation Game on Nov. 29.

“We need to play harder,” Beck said. “That wasn’t even close.”

The team showed strength on the perimeter and down low. Point guard Samantha Gonzalez made five three-pointers and scored a team-high 17 points. In the post, Christina Mandich and Kayla Gardner combined for 15 points and nine rebounds.

The defense, however, was unable to contain Casa Roble.

“We could be very aggressive,” Beck said. “We could get up and down the court, and we will defend. But we are not at that point right now.”

The team is making strides, though. The Timberwolves are moving on with just three seniors and a collection of young players who finished third in the Whitney Winter Invitational with a 47-39 victory over the host Wildcats on Saturday. Fia Hoskinson scored 18 points in a 47-38 win over El Dorado on Thursday and 18 against Whitney. Gardner scored 11 against El Dorado and 10 against Whitney. Hoskinson averaged 5.1 points a game last season as a sophomore.

“The area that we need to improve the most in is decision-making and handling the ball,” Beck said. “We are young, and I understand that.”

Last season: 22-10 overall record, 8-4 in the Sierra Foothill League. Woodcreek finished second in the SFL and lost in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II semifinals.

Games of note: The Timberwolves will have three league games under their belts before meeting defending league champ Del Oro on Jan. 26 in Loomis.
