Woodcreek freshman Mason wins section regional wrestling title
Freshman Lauren Mason and sophomore Marissa Thomas will represent Woodcreek High School in the CIF Girls State Invitational Championships.
Mason won the 103-pound championship at the Sac-Joaquin Section Girls Wrestling Regional Tournament, and Thomas was the runner-up at 108 pounds Saturday at McNair High School in Stockton.
“We had a great showing,” Woodcreek coach Doug Mason said.
Mason recorded three pins before winning a 15-10 decision over two-time state medalist Sarah Phillips of Manteca-East Union.
Mason was pinned by Phillips in a previous match this season, but she scored a reversal and led Phillips 9-6 entering the third period. Mason clinched the victory with a takedown and near-fall in the third period.
Thomas won on a technical fall and a pin, and she advanced to the final with a 4-1 decision.
Like Mason and Phillips, Thomas lost a previous match to final-round opponent Gurleen Chahal of Livingston. Battling an illness, Thomas avoided a pin in the third period but lost a 4-1 decision.
“In the finals, it was a tense atmosphere going into each match,” Doug Mason said. “Marissa fought hard for at least a minute and did not get pinned. Considering her health, this was a great effort from Marissa. Taking second at the girls masters is quite an accomplishment.”
Also, Jade Larson-Iacovino of Oakmont went 2-2 at 154 pounds. Her two wins came via pin.
Madison Fitzgerald of Whitney won the 122-pound class, and Olivia Seppini of Rocklin claimed the 126-pound title. Gabby Eslinger of Lincoln placed second at 114, and Terrie Tran of Whitney was sixth at 98.
The state tournament is scheduled for Feb. 22-23 in Lemoore.
