Woodcreek clinches berth in soccer playoffs
LOOMIS — To the victor usually go the spoils, but Del Oro High School’s boys soccer team caught a healthy break Tuesday despite losing to Roseville 4-2 on Senior Night.
By virtue of Woodcreek’s 1-0 victory over Nevada Union, Del Oro’s ugly loss to Roseville didn’t mean the end of its season. The Timberwolves (5-4-1) clinched the Sierra Foothill League’s No. 2 seed for the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs with the win.
Del Oro (4-5-1) and Nevada Union (4-5-1) now will play a one-game playoff at 4 p.m. Thursday at Rocklin High to determine the third and final playoff berth from the SFL.
Granite Bay (9-1) won the SFL championship. Woodcreek’s playoff berth was achieved under Cory Clonce, the school’s first new boys soccer head coach in 20 years.
Del Oro’s Senior Night was spoiled until the team learned of its potential to make the postseason. The Golden Eagles entered the match in a three-way tie with Nevada Union and Woodcreek.
Del Oro and Nevada Union split the two-game season series 1-1. Each team won at home by identical 2-1 scores.
