Woodcreek boys take first loss in Merced

Timberwolves lose in overtime
A Ryan Milat lay-up that would have won the game bounced away and left the Woodcreek boys basketball team one point short on the trip to Merced Saturday. For the Timberwolves, it was their first loss of the season, a 75-74 overtime defeat at the hands of a talented Bear squad, but it was a game Woodcreek could have won. “We played really hard as usual but we weren't very smart, especially down the stretch and in OT,” said Woodcreek coach Burnel Pinkerton. “We let the refs and some of their players get in our heads. We need to handle adversity better.” Woodcreek had a poor shooting night, hitting just 41 percent of its shots, and turned it over a season-high 18 times. We didn't rebound very well,” Pinkerton said. “Despite all of it we still had a chance to win. This loss will haunt us for a while.” Nik Milani scored 22 points to lead the Timberwolves, and Mike Kurtz tallied 21 while grabbing nine rebounds and blocking five shots. Milat scored 10 for the T-wolves, who are off until next Monday when they will be in San Diego at the Surf ‘N Slam Tournament against a strong national field of teams.
