Woodcreek 9/10s open NorCal Division 2 tourney with rout
RANCHO MURIETA — The Northern California Division 2 Tournament began the way the last two tournaments did for Woodcreek Little League’s 9/10 all-stars, with a mercy-rule victory.
Woodcreek defeated Turlock American 14-1 on Sunday morning at Stonehouse Park, scoring 12 runs in the first inning and using four pitchers to throw fewer than 22 pitches each. Zachery Watari, Owen Cuffe, Jeffrey Bauser and Carson Blatnick each pitched one inning.
The win moved Woodcreek into the second round against Pacifica American at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
“We’ve been working hard, and I knew we had it in us. The team played great; it wasn’t just me. We all had RBIs,” Blatnick said.
Five Woodcreek hitters each had at least one RBI.
Blatnick hit two home runs for the first time in his young career. Both were two-run shots. Alec Gums belted a home run for one of his two RBI. Bauser drove in two runs with a double, and Bradley Morin had an RBI groundout.
Three runs scored on a passed ball and two wild pitches.
Turlock American’s starter was lifted after throwing just four pitches.
“It felt good, because it’s the first two home run game of my life, but it’s not mine. It belongs to my team,” Blatnick said. “My teammates were the ones who got on base and allowed me to do that. It was all them.”
The next game could very well take all 14 Woodcreek players contributing again. Pacifica American opened with an 8-7 win over Los Gatos and followed by routing Fairfield Atlantic 16-1 on Sunday.
