Woodcreek High School freshman Lauren Mason earned a fourth-place medal and sophomore Marissa Thomas placed seventh at the CIF State Girls Wrestling Championships last weekend in Lemoore.

“They were fantastic,” said Doug Mason, Woodcreek’s coach and father of Lauren. “Our goal this year was to get to state. They met all of our expectations. Down there at state, that’s where all the good ones are. They had to qualify to get there, and they were all tough.”

Lauren Mason (32-4) went into the state tournament as a Sac-Joaquin Section Regional champion and opened her competition in the 103-pound class with an 8-0 decision over Casandra Sandoval of Lemoore. Mason followed with decisions over Stephanie Pulido of Anaheim-Savanna 6-1 and Victoria Smith of Central Union 8-6 in overtime.

Mason then lost 8-5 in the semifinals to eventual runner-up Angelica Llanes of Arvin. Mason came back to edge Sarah Phillips of Manteca-East Union 4-3 and lost to Brittny Hernandez of Covina-Charter Oak 6-4 in the third-place match.

Thomas (31-5) had two byes at 108 pounds and then defeated Beatrice Cortez of Anaheim-Western 3-0 before being pinned at 5 minutes, 24 seconds in the quarterfinals by eventual champ Gabby Garcia of Valencia. Garcia was 32-1 with 31 pins this season.

Thomas won her next match 2-1 and lost her final match.
