Sierra Hosts Sequoias Saturday In Key Test

Ho hum, just another week in the Valley Conference. That’s the football storyline for the Sierra College Wolverines as they used a huge road win last Saturday to wiggle their way back into the Valley Conference’s football pennant chase. Thanks to a wild 38-33 win at Modesto JC last Saturday night, Sierra, 3-4 overall, squared its Valley Conference record at 1-1 and joined four other teams that sit one game behind league leading San Joaquin Delta’s 2-0 mark. Sierra,, which had lost 23-16 at home to Fresno City two weeks ago, now returns home for two critical conference games. Saturday the Wolverines host College of Sequoias at 1 p.m. The Wolveines then close at home versus Delta on Nov. 3 and at American River on Nov. 10. “Yes, our record is deceiving,” said Sierra coach Jeff Tisdel. “We could easily be 6-1 or 5-2. But the kids played a great game last week.” In Sierra’s win, the Wolverines built a 31-7 lead early in the third quarter before having to hold off the host Pirates who closed with a 20-point fourth quarter. Sierra quarterbacks Myles McKee and Zach McElroy combined for a23 of 44 night in the air for 298 yards and four touchdowns. Receiver Vince Mayle (Inderkum) caught seven passes for 99 yards and three scores. On defense, Mike Saulter (Del Campo) and Jordan Harter (Ponderosa) led the way with 13 and 12 tackles respectively. Zach Starnes (Woodland) added an interception. “We’ve got another big game this week,” said Tisdel. “Sequoias has a very explosive offense.”
