Wheelchair tennis tournament at Johnson Ranch
The International Tennis Federation Future Series will hold a wheelchair tennis tournament from Friday through Sunday at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club.
Play begins at 1 p.m. Friday for players from the United States, Canada and Mexico, according to a news release. The tournament is sanctioned by the ITF and United States Tennis Association.

Granite Bay youth climbs to nationals
Joseph Diaz of Granite Bay finished fifth in sport and sixth in speed in the Male Youth B category at the Sport Climbing Series Divisional Championship in Salt Lake City.
Those finishes qualified Diaz, 14, for the National Championship from July 7-10 in Atlanta. Diaz had a final score of 44.17 points in sport and 10.78 seconds in speed, 1.33 seconds better than his qualifying time.
Granite Bay golfer attends Ryder Cup Academy
Granite Bay High School student Alex Gibbs was one of 70 junior golfers who were selected to participate in the Ryder Cup Junior Academy earlier this month at the PGA Center for Golf Learning and Performance in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
The camp featured 1995 U.S. Ryder Cup Captain Lanny Wadkins and offered instruction from PGA pros, according to a news release.
“The vision of the academy is to provide up-and-coming juniors a unique chance to attend an elite Ryder Cup training camp,” Wadkins said.
A second camp is scheduled from July 11-17 and features 1979 Ryder Cup Captain Billy Casper and 1977 Captain Dow Finsterwald as guest instructors, according to the news release.
Gibbs was one of two Californians to be selected.
Local golfers selected for First Tee Open
Clare Sorensen of Roseville and Brandon Baumgarten of Granite Bay were selected to play in the Nature Valley First Tee Open from July 8-10 at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Sorensen and Baumgarten belong to The First Tee of Greater Sacramento. They’ll join Drew Robbins of Fair Oaks, Sara Scarlett of Woodland and Nichole Cruz of Rancho Murieta in the Champions Tour event.
The tournament matches 78 juniors with 78 pros and is televised on the Golf Channel.
Woodcreek foursome qualifies for Zone tourney
Brad Ables, Gary Costello, Keith Erickson and Paul Valdez of Woodcreek Golf Club won the NCGA East Sacramento Zone Championship at Poppy Hills and Quail Lodge in Carmel and qualified for the Zone Championship on Aug. 29 and 30 at Poppy Hills and Spyglass Hill.
Woodcreek came from four strokes behind and carded a net score of 37-under-par 249 to register a five-stroke victory.
The Ridge in Auburn beat Cordova in a playoff to qualify for the Zone Championship.
Wimbledon hits big screen in Roseville
The Roseville 14 is among the theaters scheduled to show the 125th Wimbledon tennis championships in RealD 3D for the first time.
The ladies’ singles final is scheduled for 6 a.m. Saturday, July 2. The gentlemen’s final is scheduled for 6 a.m. Sunday, July 3.
Tickets cost $18 for adults, $17 for seniors and students and $16 for children and are available at the Roseville 14 box office at 1555 Eureka Road.
