Fare increases and modifications made to Roseville Transit routes
Several Roseville Transit routes have been eliminated, while others have been modified in an effort to close an estimated $900,000 gap in funding. Alternative Transportation Manager Mike Wixon presented recommended route modifications and a 25 cent fare increase for the Dial-a-Ride service to the Roseville City Council Wednesday. “We didn’t want to make wholesale cuts,” Wixon said. “We want to still have a good service when all is said and done.” A shortage of key revenue sources including local transportation funding, sales tax and low ridership has created a need to modify services and routes, Wixon said. Among the modifications to services are eliminating free transfers between Roseville Transit fixed routes, aligning routes of similar service points and eliminating the H route due to low ridership. Routes C and G, which serviced Sierra Gardens in two loop routes, were combined with the E and F routes and made linear to allow riders two opportunities for pick up and drop off. Wixon said the modification from a looped route to a linear route would save an estimated $326,000 annually. Although Roseville Transit will continue the first run of service at 6 a.m. with new buses continuing every hour, the last buses will now begin their run at around 6:30 p.m. instead of 7:30 p.m. During public comment Roseville resident Geraldine, who declined to give her last name, was frustrated at the early final run as it made finding a ride home from work difficult for her and her nephew. “My nephew has to walk home from work because he can’t get a ride, that’s not right,” Geraldine said. “I have had to change jobs because I can’t get a ride home from work. I know money is a problem, it’s a problem for everything but there should be a couple of buses at night.” Mayor Gina Garbolino called the situation “impossible” and said that it was a matter of what the city could do with the money available. “It’s about money, all of this is about money,” Garbolino said. The Dial-a-Ride fares were also increased 25 cents and additional fees added for missed and same-day service. Wixon said the Transportation Department would work with riders to implement the new fees, but that if a Dial-a-Ride service was missed it would be $7.50. “We don’t want to surprise people with this, but if Dial-a-Ride is sent out and no one’s there, that’s a service and revenue that’s lost and needs to be recovered,” Wixon said. Charging residents $7.50 for same day Dial-A-Ride service is an incentive to plan their trips in advance, Wixon said. Debbie Scott requested council consider a monthly pass for Dial-A-Ride customers like herself who often take several trips a day with the service and, with the new fare increase, would begin to spend more than $100 a month on rides to her many doctor’s appointments. Council approved the recommended modifications and Councilwoman Carol Garcia requested that the Transportation Department staff consider the monthly pass for Dial-a-Ride customers and increasing transit hours as funds become available. In another action Wednesday night, five longtime community members will see their names attached to parks in honor of their service and contribution to the city of Roseville. Council approved the recommended names for two new parks and three existing ball fields. Tara Gee, senior landscape architect presented the five recommended names that were selected from the 87 submittals that were received by the community between Nov. 5 2009 and Dec. 4 2009. Bud Nichols and Fred Festersen Sr. will have parks near Chilton Middle School and Junction Elementary School respectively, while Richard Alway Sr., Ronald Roccucci and Philip Kister will all see their name in lights at ballfields throughout Roseville. Fred Festersen was not alone in thanking the council for the honor and his sentiments were shared by many of the other residents honored. “I am humbled by this honor and I don’t feel I deserve it but I’m going to accept it anyways,” said Festersen, a Roseville resident since the 1920s. “This city has given me far more than I have given it and I thank you.” To find out how your route was changed roseville.ca.us/transportation to view route maps, times and fares
