Oakmont High’s varsity football squad fell to 0-3 in Sierra Foothill League play Friday night, but the Vikings players and coaches left the field with their heads held high. The Vikings (2-6 overall) lost the game 29-14 but they outscored visiting Rocklin 14-7 in the second half. “There are always positives,” Oakmont coach Dale Mortensen said. “We look out there and what we see is 45 young men, all of them at some point doing something nice and all of them giving us their best. I don’t always like the result (score) but I always love the effort these guys give.” The second half was played with a running clock and the rain that was steady in the first half continued throughout the second. “We made a few adjustments (at halftime) on defense and a few on offense and one on special teams and we wanted to get something going,” Mortensen said. Rocklin (3-5 overall, 1-2 in the SFL) scored early in the second half on junior Daniel Lessard’s second short touchdown run of the night, making the score 29-0. Both of Oakmont’s touchdowns came in the final five minutes. Oakmont junior Tyree Camp scored on a four-yard run with 4:47 left and senior quarterback Matt Ewing ran in the conversion. Ewing then scored on a four-yard run of his own with 12 seconds remaining in the game and the conversion was no good. Ewing ran 18 times for 119 yards on the night and he 4-of-9 passes for 46 yards. His top receiver was Craig Morris (three catches for 46 yards). Senior Randy Purdy ran 12 times for 52 yards. “Rocklin is a physical force and anybody who plays them will tell you that,” Mortensen said. “It got nasty out there a little and our guys went toe-to-toe with them.” Rocklin sophomore quarterback Jimmy Laughrea threw two first-half touchdowns, one to Chris Clowdus (32 yards) and one to Holden Huff (50 yards). Rocklin won the junior varsity game 14-13. Oakmont turned the ball over on downs at Rocklin’s 28-yard-line with 41 seconds left in the game.
