A dominating pitching performance by Ryan Cordell and an eight-run third inning were all that was needed for Valley Christian Academy playoff win Wednesday. The VCA baseball team opened its defense of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division VII title with an 11-0 whitewashing of Millenium from Tracy. Junior Casas blasted a two-out, two-run home run in the first inning to put the Lions on the board, but that was just the appetizer to the offensive feast that followed. Paul Finnell lead off the third with a base hit, and after a bunt hit by Jimmy Shaw, the hits kept coming. The stanza was highlighted by a two-run blast off the bat of Matt Meeink. Micky DeFiebre and Joey Parker also delivered solid contributions in the batter's box for Valley Christian. While the scoring was going on, the Falcons of Millenium High got nothing started against Cordell, as 14 of the 15 outs he recorded in the five-inning shortened contest came by way of the strikeout. He allowed just three hits and hit one batter on his way to the complete game shutout. The win propels the Lions into the second round of the tourney and a best-of-three series with Stone Ridge Christian of Merced, an 8-2 first round winner over Faith Christian. Game one of the series will be played at noon Saturday, with game two and three (if necessary) set for Tuesday. The Division VII early rounds are all being played at Galt Community Park.
