Valley Christian tunes up for playoffs with back-to-back shutouts

Valley Christian Academy ended the regular season with two five-inning shutouts — 16-0 over Trinity Prep on Monday in Napa and 10-0 over Faith Christian on Tuesday at home.

Jake Sween and Micah Gunter combined on a no-hitter against Trinity Prep, and the Lions scored eight runs in the top of the first. Sween allowed one walk and struck out 10 in four innings.

Jeremiah Moore allowed two infield hits, walked two and struck out 10 against Faith Christian.

Jimmy Shaw, Teagan Mowry and Brock Woodside homered in the win over Faith. Shaw was 3 for 4 with three RBI, and Mowry and Woodside each went 2 for 2. Mowry also had a double.

Levi Hagerty went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBI, and Isaac Van Patten was 2 for 2 with two RBI.

The Lions (19-6 overall, 10-0 Sacramento Metro Athletic League) on Wednesday begin their quest for their fourth Sac-Joaquin Section championship in five years.
Valley Christian will meet Mountain Valley League runner-up Tioga at 7 p.m. at McAuliffe Memorial Ballparks in Sacramento.

“Hopefully, we are peaking at the right time,” Lions coach Brad Gunter Jr. said.

Softball

Roseville 10, Granite Bay 8 — The Tigers (17-7-1, 10-5 SFL) scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to top the Grizzlies (7-14, 3-12) in a slugfest.

Consecutive singles by Kayla Fields, Taylor McDowell, Danielle Crockett and Stephenie Johnson, a sacrifice fly by Bre Martinez, a single by Kalei Levy and a home run by Lollie Fitzpatrick gave Roseville a 10-5 lead going into the seventh.

Granite Bay took a 4-0 lead in the top of the third on run-scoring singles by Paige LeBeau and Kristin Kurpershoek, sandwiched around an RBI double by Maricela Garza. Martinez hit a two-run homer for Roseville, and Mackensie Priley roped a two-run single. Garza had a two-run double in the seventh and finished with three RBI for Granite Bay, and Claire Ellinwood went 3 for 4 with a double.

Valley Christian 16, Sacramento Country Day 1 — Katie Urban pitched a one-hitter and had two hits to lift the Lady Lions in their regular-season finale. Erin Patterson, Nicole DeFiebre and Morgan Jordan each had two hits, DeFiebre with a triple.

Valley Christian lost to Vacaville-Buckingham Charter 14-1 and blew out Country Day 15-3 in earlier games. Urban had a triple, and DeFiebre, Patterson, Irene Niulala and Cassidy Bowen each had a double in the win.
