Woodcreek softball scores big victory over visiting Miami school

Valley Christian Academy opened the high school baseball season by beating Foothill 5-3 and Rio Linda 3-0.

Starting pitcher Jimmy Shaw and relievers Jake Sween and Jeremiah Moore combined on a four-hitter with 13 strikeouts to beat Foothill, and Quentin Moore and Levi Hagerty each drove in two runs.

Sween followed up by striking out seven in five innings against Rio Linda. Caleb Van Patten and Moore finished the two-hitter, and the Lions didn’t allow a walk.
Moore had a double and single, Sween had two hits, and Shaw had a double and an RBI.

Valley Christian is scheduled to play at Woodcreek today in the SureWest/Roseville Tiger Invitational.

Valley Christian’s JV team beat Foothill 12-9.


Woodcreek 3, Miami-Gulliver Prep 1 — Amanda Horbasch pitched one-hit ball and struck out nine over four innings as the Timberwolves (7-0) beat the Raiders (5-2) at Mahany Field.

It was a meeting between teams ranked sixth (Woodcreek) and eighth (Gulliver Prep) in the nation, according to The website also ranked Woodcreek No. 1 in the state.

Alexia Pratt and Lexi Wilkerson each drove in a run for the Timberwolves, and Nicole Miller had two hits and scored two runs.

Roseville 3-1-1 in tourney — Delany DeMello allowed just one hit in two games to help the Tigers win three of four on Friday and Saturday in the Victory Pre-Season Tournament at the Sacramento Softball Complex.

DeMello pitched a six-inning perfect game and struck out 12 in a 7-0 victory over Reno-McQueen on Friday and a one-hitter in an 8-0 win over Spanish Springs of Sparks, Nev., on Saturday.

Taylor McDowell was 3 for 3 against McQueen, part of her 8-for-14 weekend, and Kalei Levy had two of Roseville’s 12 hits.

Kayla Fields and Naomi Monohan then combined on a no-hitter in a 16-0 blanking of Reno-Wooster. McDowell and Lollie Fitzpatrick each hit a three-run homer for the Tigers. Monohan was 2 for 2 with a triple. Fields and Levy each had a double and single.

On Saturday, Roseville was held to two hits — both by DeMello — in a 2-0 loss to Del Campo.

The Tigers came back to rip 11 hits against Spanish Springs. Fitzpatrick blasted a three-run homer in the first. McDowell, DeMello and Levy had two hits each.
Roseville pitching allowed nine hits in five games.

Girls soccer

Granite Bay 1, Oakmont 1 — Sophomore Makenzie Brito scored with two minutes left as the Grizzlies salvaged a tie with the Vikings. Claire Falzarano scored for Oakmont on an assist by Kristen Sui in the 54th minute.

JV softball

Woodcreek wins title — The Timberwolves (7-0) ran the table to win the Victory Pre-Season Tournament at Kloss Park in Elk Grove. Woodcreek defeated Lincoln 18-0, Whitney 6-2, Napa-Vintage 5-0, Lodi 4-2 and Rocklin 6-2.

Freshman Riley Adams earned the win against Whitney, Vintage and Lodi. She allowed three earned runs and nine hits in 19 innings. Adams walked 11 and struck out 20. Sophomore Katie Wood allowed one run and four hits in nine innings and earned wins against Lincoln and Rocklin. She walked three and struck out 13.

Freshman Amber Budmark hit .500 (7 for 14) in the tournament with two doubles, two triples and five RBI. She also scored five runs. Freshman Jessica Nogosek hit .455 (5 for 11) with a home run and scored seven runs. Adams hit .417 (5 for 12).

JV boys lacrosse

Granite Bay 7, Danville-Monte Vista 1 — Team captain and crease defenseman Nick Gainer dished to Brandon Smith for a goal, and Owen McNiff assisted Andy Moudakis for another in the second period as the Grizzlies pulled away from a 1-1 tie.

Moudakis and attackman Scott Zobrowski scored two goals each for Granite Bay. Dayton Allegra and Dakota Burley also scored, and Austin Allegra assisted Moudakis on a late goal. McNiff had two assists.

Defenseman Mathew Postell won six key face-offs, and goalkeeper Ryan Arneson had seven saves.
