GALT – Valley Christian Academy lost its composure and let nerves get the best of it Tuesday night in a Sac-Joaquin Section Division V semifinal against Bradshaw Christian.

The third-seeded Lions left Galt High School with a disheartening 61-45 loss to second-seeded Bradshaw.

Valley Christian (25-4) trailed 10-2 after a dismal first quarter.

“We’ve been here before,” a disappointed Valley Christian coach Brad Gunter Jr. said. “We should have learned off of it. We had a plan of attack offensively, and we scrapped. The team just absolutely scrapped it on me. We tried to make some adjustments. We got back in it.”

Valley Christian trailed 15-2 before Joey Parker hit a free throw with five minutes left in the half. It was the team’s first point in more than eight minutes.
The Lions finally got some offense going but didn’t make up much ground, trailing 24-16 at halftime.

“I think it was a combination of nerves, wanting to do too much. … It’s not that their effort wasn’t good; it was their execution was terrible,” Gunter said. “They were giving me everything they had; they were just doing it wrong. It was one on five or two on five. Then the other third of the part would be Bradshaw. They’re a good ballclub.”

The Lions pulled within five and made their best rally with the minutes ticking away in the fourth quarter. Trailing 50-45 with 2:55 remaining, the Lions were forced to foul and Bradshaw finished on an 11-0 run.

The Lions committed 12 turnovers and were outrebounded by Bradshaw 36-29. Another downfall for Valley Christian was at the free-throw line. Bradshaw made more free throws (18) than Valley Christian attempted (14).

“Our whole goal was to attack the glass and get to the line ourselves, and we didn’t do it, at all,” Gunter said. “A lot of that was our fault.”

Bradshaw lost to fourth-seeded Vacaville Christian in the championship game.

Valley Christian on Sunday drew the No. 11 seed for the NorCal Regionals and will travel to Redding on Tuesday to face Liberty Christian (24-4) at 7 p.m.
