Valley Christian football starting over on offense, defense

Football is a game of depth and resources. Speed, size and skill are the currency that buys victories. But sometimes, the supply doesn’t meet the demand.

Valley Christian Academy head coach Todd Conroy knows these economics all too well, given a roster that never breaks 30 players. It’s been a building process for a school that has no youth league to feed players, but Conroy continues to work.

“We changed our offense, and we changed our defense,” he said. “We brought in some new coordinators. We’re kind of starting over at a point where we think our guys are a lot better.”

Valley Christian played Jekyll and Hyde in a jamboree against several teams last weekend at Kennedy. Broken down into 15-minute sets on offense and defense, Lions running back Nick Norwood rushed for 82 yards in six carries in a single offensive period. Teagan Mowry made three tackles for negative yardage, and tackle Nick Ruth recorded a sack and two assists.

“We’re going to exploit where we can,” Conroy said. “We are going to stay within our sets and stay inside. If they’re blowing us up inside, then we’ll bounce it outside.”

At other times, Valley Christian’s weaknesses showed, specifically against a solid Sutter team. Sutter scored a plethora of touchdowns due to sloppy tackling and weak outside defense by the Lions. In their offensive set against Sutter, Valley Christian failed to score.

“Against the tougher competition, they were a little tentative,” Conroy said. “We have to hit harder and realize that every single team is exactly the same. Rather than thinking of them as a weaker team or whatever, we just have to execute.”

Valley Christian’s top players include Ruth and Norwood with Mowry starting at quarterback. Josh Bowden is a two-way contributor at tight end and defensive line. Running backs Bryan Alvarez and Brandan Androkitis figure to get carries as well.

“I just want to do my best and help wherever I can,” Bowden said. “Some of the goals we have are to show good character and do our best.”
