The Valley Christian Academy baseball team made short work of Stone Ridge Christian Wednesday and in the process set itself up for the section title game Monday. The Lions scored six runs in the second and tacked on three in the fifth to put away Stone Ridge 10-0 in five innings by way of the 10-run mercy rule. When pitcher Ryan Cordell scored the 10th run on a wild throw back to the pitcher in the fifth, it brought the Sac-Joaquin Section Division VII semifinal at Galt Community Park to an end, and preserved Cordell's arm for Monday's section championship game. VCA had runners all over the bases all day long, and a bases-clearing three-run double by Joey Parker provided the first big offense for the Lions in the second. Paul Finnell had three hits for Valley Christian, while Junior Casas, Jimmy Shaw and Donovan Allen each had two hits. Cordell allowed just two hits in five strong innings on the mound. The senior right-hander struck out seven and walked two, but stayed under 80 pitches. The win gives the Lions a sweep in the best-of-three series and sets up a battle between the top two teams in the Sacramento Metro Athletic League for the section crown. A pitching matchup between Cordell and Bradshaw Christian's Brady Dragmire promises to be a classic. The game will be played Monday at noon, with the location to be determined. They will play either at Tony Zupo Field in Lodi or at Sacramento City College.
