Big Valley Christian scored 52 points more than it had to in a 53-0 blanking of Valley Christian on Saturday at Highlands High School. Big Valley dominated both sides of the ball in the trenches and at the skill positions, outgaining Valley Christian 376-88.
Valley Christian’s run game was suffocated by a tough Big Valley defense that sealed the A and B gaps inside, allowing just 37 yards. Big Valley made 12 tackles for a loss and had two sacks. The normally productive Aaron Perchaz of Valley Christian was held to four yards rushing and was stopped four times in the backfield.
“We were overmatched,” Valley Christian coach Todd Conroy said. “They were a little bit faster and quicker off the ball. We didn’t make a lot of adjustments on blitz patterns, and their packages were a lot faster than us. We’ve got some work to do to get better.”
Big Valley’s offense was a mirror image of its defense, a dominating presence in the trenches that churned out 324 yards rushing with eight runners. The offensive line of Makarios Malik, Andrew Wilson, Nolan Cunningham, Kyle Russell and Kyle Filburn took Valley Christian’s front seven out of the picture.
“The first thing I want to focus on this week is tackling,” Conroy said. “We went backward in our tackling. We used to work hard on our form, but right now we’ve gone to arm tackles and we can’t do that. We have to get back to wrapping guys and driving them backward.”
Jonathan Golliher of Big Valley (4-1) rushed for a 28-yard touchdown in the first three minutes of the game. Valley Christian fell into a deeper hole early when Daniel Mori blocked a punt on the ensuing possession, leading to a recovery by Jonathan Amaral in the end zone for a score. Luke Lemings scored two touchdowns on runs of four and seven yards, and Big Valley had a quick 27-0 lead.
Casey Kahler contributed a 19-yard scoring run in the second quarter, and Daniel Doyle scored on a 12-yard counter to put Big Valley up 41-0 at halftime.
Valley Christian looked like it would ruin the shutout late in the game when it executed a 15-play drive to the Big Valley 6-yard line. But Wright Hagerty’s floating pass to the end zone on fourth and six fell into the hands of Danny Kitchin for an interception.
Conroy hopes his young team – Valley Christian is 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the Sacramento Metro Athletic League – can learn from the loss and move on to the next opponent: Woodland Christian next Saturday, Oct. 9.
“It’s absolutely a teaching moment,” Conroy said. “It would have been nice if some of the older guys stepped up a little bit. It took them too long in the game to figure it out. It’s an obvious teaching thing for the sophomores and the freshmen.”
