With a huge game on the schedule on Saturday night, the Valley Christian Academy boys basketball team took a different approach Friday night at Lutheran High in Elk Grove. “Our game plan was to lay back with containment defense and make sure that the bench had ample opportunity to play,” said VCA coach Brad Gunter. “Our bench did an amazing job on the night. They accounted for 48 of the 86 points scored on the evening. We were able to see how deep we are in this game.” The Lions roared early, outscoring Lutheran 30-6 in the opening quarter before taking the foot off the gas pedal and coasting to an 86-43 win. Ryan Cordell played just a quarter and a half, but still managed to score 23 points for Valley Christian. Sophomore guard Jason Gish dropped in 13 points, and three Lions (Rob Frank, Serge Lazaresku and Caleb Bowden) each posted 10 points. Valley Christian (4-0 in the SMAL, 14-3 overall) gets right back on the court Saturday night on the road at powerful Sacramento Country Day (4-1, 13-2). The Cavaliers are led by Robbie Lemons, the state’s leading scorer with nearly 37 points per game. “That will be an exciting challenge for us,” Gunter said.
